Improve your sleep quality naturally with these Best Herbs for Sleep plus Herbal Tea Recipes that will help you fall asleep FAST!
Sleep deprivation can cause a host of health problems. In the short term, I night of little or no sleep can cause you to feel tired, cranky, and out of sorts. In the long term, sleep deprivation can cause more serious issues.
Reduced brain and cognitive function, weakened immunity, increased anxiety and depression, heart disease, adrenal fatigue, autoimmune disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, decreased sex drive, reduced work performance, increased accidents and injuries, and poor balance are just some of the effects you might notice with prolonged sleep deprivation.
Not getting enough sleep may also be making you fat. With sleep deprivation, the chemicals that signal to your brain that you are full become off-balance. As a result, you are more likely to overindulge even when you’ve had enough to eat.
Reduced sleep may also make you too tired to exercise regularly, making it that much more difficult to reach your weight loss and fitness goals.
So how much sleep is enough? Sleep requirements depend on the individual, but most adults need between 7-9 hours of sleep every night. More than 40% of Americans don’t get the recommended amount of sleep, making sleep deprivation a widespread problem.
While you should consult your doctor for any serious sleep disorders, you can start improving your sleep quality with simple natural protocols that are perfectly healthy and actually work for the majority of people.
These natural treatments include herbs. Many herbs are extremely useful as a natural sleep aid to help you fall asleep fast – even when you suffer from chronic insomnia.
One of the easiest ways to use herbs as a sleep aid is in hot tea. Make a cup of the herbal tea recipes featured below every night to relax and unwind before bed.
Herbal teas don’t contain caffeine, so they are the perfect beverage to drink all day and night if you like. Avoid coffee and other caffeinated beverages after 3 p.m., as caffeine can affect your sleep up to 6 hours after consumption.

The best herbs for insomnia include the following. Herbs in bold are the most commonly used. I get my herbs from my local health food store, but if you’re looking for an online source, Mountain Rose Herbs has the best quality herbs at great prices (+ watch for sales!).
Lavender is an herb that is very well known for its calming effects. This is the first herb I usually reach for because it works really well to relax and calm and is super safe to use, extremely common, and easy to find.
I have a lavender plant right outside my front door that sends fresh lavender scent through my screen door and into my living room.
I also harvest lavender flowers from this plant for this tasty and relaxing natural tea recipe and for colorful and sweet-smelling bouquets that last long after the flowers have dried.
This natural sleep aid recipe is recommended for adults and overtired children alike.
I’m not a mother, but my sister has kids and a grandson. As an involved Auntie Sarah, I know how difficult it is to deal with an overtired child.
Try this drink featuring rose, lavender, and lemon balm, which has sedative properties, and peppermint that aids digestion and soothes achy tummies to (hopefully) send them off to dreamland as soon as possible.
Sweet Sleep Tea is the perfect tea to relax and de-stress. This tea contains chamomile flowers, lavender buds, and rose petals.
Rose petals are said to calm the nerves and improve your emotions, which makes this tea the go-to when life gets overwhelming.
Honey further promotes sleep, and orange peel adds a fresh citrus taste and Vitamin C.
In addition to being an effective natural remedy for insomnia, cinnamon has many other wonderful health benefits, including reducing inflammation, lowering blood sugar, boosting immunity and brain function, preventing some cancers, and even reducing the risk of contracting HIV!
This tea consists of chamomile, lavender, lemon balm, and passionflower.
Chamomile, lavender, and lemon balm are all mainstays in treating sleep problems, but passionflower is a less well known treatment.
Passionflower is great at treating insomnia caused by anxiety and stress.
This recipe is a SERIOUS natural sleep aid. This is the type of tea and tincture that can be taken when all else fails because it is so powerful.
This tea and tincture should only be taken for 14 days at a time and should not be taken during pregnancy or in conjunction with antidepressants/MAO inhibitors, sedatives, or anti-convulsants.
If you are dealing with a serious bout of insomnia, this is the recipe you need to try.
This natural sleep aid recipe is a very powerful treatment for insomnia.
This tea helps reduce stress, anxiety, and indigestion; enhances sleep; and can even help heal cold sores faster!
Lemon balm is an herb often recommended for insomnia. Lemon balm greatly increases its sleep inducing properties when combined with other sleep inducing herbs like Chamomile and Valerian.
Magnesium deficiency can cause serious sleep problems.
One way to replenish magnesium levels in your body is to drink this tea, which is like taking a natural magnesium supplement, since banana peels are rich in magnesium, as well as potassium.
Both of these nutrients are natural relaxants for the body.
You can also treat magnesium deficiency with regular Epsom Salt Baths and my DIY Magnesium Oil Spray Recipe.
If you suffer from insomnia, or just want a more restful night, these Best Herbs for Sleep and Herbal Tea Recipes are the perfect natural remedy to help you fall asleep fast and stay asleep all night long!
