If you’re unfamiliar with the keto diet, here are the basics.
The keto diet is a low carb, high fat, whole foods diet that turns your body into a fat-burning machine.
Strict adherence to a keto diet promotes weight loss, mental focus, and increased energy and fights diseases and disorders like type 2 diabetes, epilepsy, PCOS, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure and cholesterol, and autoimmune diseases.
Block out everything you’ve learned about those low-fat diets doctors have been promoting for so many years.
The keto diet promotes eating lots of fat, in order to put your body in ketosis, which is a fat burning state.
To do this, you need to consume roughly 60-80 percent of your calories from fat. The rest of your calories will come from protein (10-15 percent) and carbohydrates (less than 10 percent).
This diet is similar to the paleo and Atkins diets in that it promotes a low carb, whole foods diet, but keto goes a step further by exactly balancing macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrates) for optimal weight loss.
One common misconception about the keto diet is that it’s high in protein, but that’s actually not true at all.
On this diet, you should only consume about 10-15 percent of your calories from protein sources, making the keto diet a low to moderate protein diet.
You can even follow a vegetarian or vegan keto diet and get protein from tofu, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and animals sources like eggs and dairy (not vegan obviously).
What’s a fat bomb? Fat bombs are little bites of mostly fat that help you balance your macros while following the keto diet.
Fat bombs are usually sweet, but can be savory, too.
They are typically made with coconut oil, butter, cream cheese, nut butter, sunflower seed butter (a nut-free option), avocado, or coconut butter.
Ingredients like sugar substitutes, low-carb fruits, chocolate, nuts, and other flavorings make fat bombs taste like desserts and candies you might have enjoyed on your Standard American Diet (SAD) Diet.
These little bites of Heaven should be about 85% fat, so they are calorie dense. They help you lose weight on the keto diet by curbing cravings and keeping your full when you might be tempted to reach for high-carb or “junk” foods.
Their high fat content also keeps you in ketosis, thereby promoting fat burning, fat loss, and, ultimately, weight loss.
I usually recommend fat bombs for beginners on the keto diet because they are an easy and delicious way to satisfy sweet cravings, junk food cravings, and keep you on track even on your busiest days.
However, if you don’t struggle with cravings, you don’t need to eat fat bombs.
